What Causes Fungal Nail Infections?

Fungal nail infections are more common in men than women. Some of the more common causes are:

  • Ageing
  • Being in a warm, damp environment
  • Family history
  • Frequent use of public pools and gyms
  • Frequently wearing enclosed shoes
  • Skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and athlete's foot.

Fungal Nail Infection Symptoms

Fungal nail infection symptoms vary from person to person. The most common symptoms are:

  • Bad odour
  • Crumbling or flaking nails
  • Nail thickening
  • Pain or inflammation around the toenail area
  • Rough or ridged toenails
  • Separation/lifting of the nail from the nail bed
  • Yellow, brown or white/grey discolouration

Treatment

It's essential to start treating a fungal nail infection when you first notice any symptoms. If the infection isn't treated quickly, it can lead to nail damage or loss.

There are many ways to treat the infection depending on the severity, including:

  • Oral treatments/medications
  • Removal of the infected parts of the nail bed (debridement)
  • Topical antifungal treatments

In severe cases, a podiatrist may surgically remove part or all of the nail (partial nail avulsion).
